Advancements in internal combustion engine (ICE) technologies continue to be explored. Meanwhile, battery electric vehicles (BEV), fuel cell vehicles (FCV) and hybrid technologies (FHEV & PHEV) have also entered onto the stage, leading to quite a diverse mix of powertrains on the road. However, no matter what technology is under your hood, rest assured, that with the right coolant from BASF there will be nothing to ever sweat about.

Assisted and eventually autonomous driving are either already reality or about to soon become. While for the driver this reduces strain, it adds to the one imposed on the vehicles systems. Especially as electronic systems such as distance control, safety braking, etc. are becoming more and more complex, the demand on the braking system and the brake fluid also increases. As a pioneer of automotive safety we normally like moving in the fast lane but in this particular case our ambition is clear: Help to always put a safe stop to things - of course only when needed.

Enhanced Safety Intelligence (ESI)

Brake fluids are a crucial safety factor – they must ensure fast signal processing and breaking reactions. A low viscosity is crucial here. With a viscosity that is more than 50% lower than standard products, and exceeds international requirements, BASF's brake fluid for enhanced safety intelligence, HYDRAULAN® 406 ESI, significantly improves braking safety – even under difficult conditions. 

 

Enhanced safety is also provided by the product’s higher boiling points and its reduced low temperature viscosity. HYDRAULAN® 406 ESI is a brake fluid that covers all the specifications of DOT 3, DOT 4, DOT 5.1 NONSILICONE BASE and SAE J 1704 Low Viscosity. 

 

With the continuing technological advancement of brake systems and automated safety systems, lubricity will become an essential factor when selecting an appropriate brake fluid. Here, HYDRAULAN® 406 ESI has been formulated to provide superior lubrication and therefore extend the durability of the whole brake system.

Ester Basestocks

Fluids for e-vehicles require different base oil concepts to meet low viscosity targets, improved thermal and oxidative stability and electrical conductivity.

Polyalkylene Glycols

Fluids for e-vehicles require different base oil concepts to meet low viscosity targets, improved thermal and oxidative stability and electrical conductivity.
 

BREOX® polyalkylene glycols (PAGs) can help to meet future thermal management requirements, including

  • High heat conductivity for improved thermal management
  • Ultra-low friction coefficients for high efficiency
  • Low wear scar for optimal equipment protection


Low viscosity Polyalkylene Glycols offer high performance and desired properties to develop future e-fluids and can be used to formulate next generation e-motor, e-axle and gearbox lubricants. PAGs can enable features such as higher mileage and protection of batteries as well as long lasting equipment lifetime and fill for life requirements. With our broad portfolio of water soluble and water insoluble PAGs combined with strong expertise in tribology and chemistry, we are committed to support you to solve current and future technical challenges.

Refrigeration Esters

Depending on the e-vehicle design, air conditioner compressors can also be used for heating and supportive direct and indirect battery cooling.

Energy Efficiency Booster (EEB)

Friction performance of transmission fluids can significantly contribute to reduced CO2 footprint of e-vehicles.

  • Compatibility with low viscosity Group I to Group IV oils

BASF has developed a novel base stock technology with unique polyether-based hybrid structure. Parts of the molecular structure contribute to outstanding frictional behavior, exceeding PAO performance, while other parts help to achieve compatibility with hydrocarbon oils. The new high-performance technology can be used in various automotive applications, including transmission lubricants, gear oils and greases and enable potential CO2 savings and improved thermal management.

Metal deactivators to prevent copper corrosion

Depending on the driveline concept, copper windings are immersed permanently into the lubricant: Excellent corrosion protection is needed.
 

IRGAMET® yellow metal corrosion protection additives can help to meet future requirements as, for examaple, excellent copper corrosion protection in ASTM D130 even at elevated temperatures.
