It all started with an idea more than 90 years ago

It’s obvious that, as engine output increases, cooling also becomes more important. Engines were originally cooled almost exclusively with water. But there were several drawbacks to this approach. Among other things, it was necessary to drain the water before a cold night to prevent the water from freezing and damaging the cooling system.

The head of BASF himself was sick and tired of having to let the water out of his car every evening in the wintertime, so in the mid-1920s he charged Dr. Otto Jordan with developing an antifreeze that would protect the already quite complex cooling systems in use.

The original patent for Glysantin®, the world’s very first antifreeze, was granted in 1929. Since then, “The Original” from Ludwigshafen has continuously evolved and the GLYSANTIN® product range now also comprises innovative solutions for future mobility concepts including fuel cell and battery technologies.

Vehicle fleets around the globe are changing

Mobility solutions are continually evolving and vehicle fleets around the globe are changing. The amount of available powertrain technologies has expanded significantly: Advancements in internal combustion engines (ICE), battery electric vehicles (BEV), fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) and hybrid technologies (FHEV, PHEV) lead to a mix of powertrains on the road. This also translates into new requirements for coolant technologies. Continuously rethinking cooling, GLYSANTIN® has developed a portfolio to specifically address the needs of today’s and tomorrow’s powertrain technologies.

The GLYSANTIN® ELECTRIFIED® product family offers premium engine coolants suitable for all current and future powertrains delivering manifold protection. While traditional GLYSANTIN® products used in ICE are also suitable for hybrid technologies and indirectly cooled BEV, new dedicated products for FCEV and BEV have been developed.

Internal Combustion Engines (ICE)

In order to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions of combustion engines, smaller, lighter and hotter engines are being developed. New construction materials are being used in the manufacture of the engine cooling system. Other drivers are legislative requirements (e.g., REACH) regarding the components used in the final product. As a result, problems are observed in modern engine coolant systems, e.g., deposits, reduced functionality of the heat exchanger and increased corrosion. This requires new breakthrough technologies when it comes to future engine coolant solutions.

GLYSANTIN® G64® and GLYSANTIN® G65® not only exceed all technical requirements and fulfill the demanding legislative requirements but also sets a new benchmark for the sustainable protection of modern engines.

Hybrid Electric Vehicles (e.g., Full Hybrid Electric Vehicles (FHEV) and Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV))

Hybrid powertrain technologies represent the most complex challenge from a thermal management point of view. The internal combustion engine (ICE) requires coolants with excellent heat transfer properties while the power electronics, the electric engine, and the battery pack will operate at significantly lower temperatures. Here, coolants with a broad thermal functionality window are the key. 

Products such as GLYSANTIN® G30®, G34®, G40®, G64® and G65® work effectively in a broad temperature window, allowing for outstanding heat transfer and corrosion protection in the high temperature cooling circuit of the ICE as well the low temperature cooling circuit for the battery pack.

Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV)

Many of BASF’s traditional coolant products are already successfully used in battery electric vehicles.
Products such as GLYSANTIN® G30®, G34®, G40®, G64® and G65® help to keep battery electric vehicles in their ideal thermal window and enable optimum driving range. These products do not only offer excellent stability at high temperatures, but they also effectively prevent corrosion in a broad temperature window. As a result, good passivation is achieved in the low temperature cooling circuits for the battery pack as well as in circuits of higher temperatures, e.g., for the electric engine.

 

GLYSANTIN® G22® ELECTRIFIED® is BASF's first premium engine coolant developed specifically for indirectly cooled BEV. The ready-to-use coolant delivers a low electrical conductivity and maintains low and stable currents when exposed to a voltage source. This translates into low fluid decomposition and low generation of hydrogen, making it a safety optimized product, while ensuring optimal corrosion protection.

Low Electrical Conductivity Coolants (LECC)
BASF’s GLYSANTIN® ELECTRIFIED® LECC coolants are engineered to meet the Chinese national standard GB 29743.2-2025, which mandates the use of Low Electrical Conductivity Coolants (LECC) in electrified vehicles with independent battery cooling circuits starting October 1, 2025.

These coolants have been independently certified by third-party labs such as SGS and the Ministry of Transport of China, confirming their compliance with the GB standard. They are designed to maintain low and stable electrical conductivity for enhanced safety, minimize risks such as hydrogen generation, fluid decomposition, thermal runaway, and fire or explosion. They offer further superior corrosion protection and material compatibility and are specifically designed for low-temperature thermal management systems in EVs.
Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEV)
BASF has developed a coolant especially for fuel cells to support the current advancements in fuel cell technologies. GLYSANTIN® FC G20® ELECTRIFIED® Ready Mix provides the renowned triple protection against corrosion, overheating and frost while also delivering extremely low electrical conductivity. Therefore, it can be used with ion exchange resins in the fuel cell cooling system. Compared to non-inhibited glycol water mixtures the product continually maintains a low electrical conductivity, and by doing so, secures the electrical safety of the system and reduces loss of energy.

CARBON MANAGEMENT
GLYSANTIN® ECO BMB
In GLYSANTIN® ECO BMB products, 100% of the fossil raw materials are replaced by renewable raw materials at the beginning of the value chain according to a mass balance approach. As a result, GLYSANTIN® ECO BMB products provide a significantly lower product carbon footprint and support the reduction of CO2 emissions.
CIRCULAR SOLUTIONS
GLYSANTIN® ECO LOOP
Besides the biomass balance approach, BASF is evaluating further options to enhance the sustainability profile of its product offerings. Ongoing projects include a broad range of initiatives, for instance circular economy solutions using mechanical and chemical recycling approaches (e.g., use of post recycled packaging).

GLYSANTIN® ECO BMB

In the biomass balance (BMB) approach, fossil raw materials are replaced by renewable raw materials at the beginning of the value chain. This procedure is certified by RedCert2 and audited by TÜV Nord and thus ensures the correct attribution of renewable resources in BASF’s value chain and to the respective products.
